RIEGL’S NEWEST TERRESTRIAL LASER SCANNER CONTINUES TRAVELLING THE WORLD – TAIPEI AND HONG KONG

DEMONSTRATIONS OF THE RIEGL VZ-600I IN TAIPEI AND HONG KONG

As part of the RIEGL International network, RIEGL Asia Pacific organized two demonstrations of the latest terrestrial laser scanner, the RIEGL VZ-600i, in two of the region’s major cities, Taipei and Hong Kong.

Together with the local RIEGL distribution partners in Taipei, Linkfast Technology Limited, Thomas Gaisecker and Marcos Garcia braved the very high temperatures on site and demonstrated the unique capabilities of the scanner to both existing and potential customers.

A quick data capture near Taipei 101 was followed by an in-depth presentation delivered to a large number of attendees at the Taipei International Convention Centre. The demonstration was focused on the outstanding features of the new scanner: the low weight, the extremely high speed of data acquisition, and the ease of the simultaneous on-board registration.

A selected number of customers that had signed up for the occasion were able to see first-hand how the system operates and were extremely impressed. They were surprised to find out that the scanner was capable of acquiring scans at 6mm resolution at 10m within 25 seconds while acquiring pictures at the same time. Furthermore, thanks to the on-board data registration in real time and the use of the RIEGL Project Map App, the progress and the coverage of the surveying mission can be monitored in real time.

While in the “classroom”, they witnessed the seamless data upload into RiSCAN PRO, RIEGL’s proprietary scan data processing software. There, the use of the “One Touch Processing Wizard” enables fully automatic data processing from data import to the final product, a filtered, accurately registered, classified and attribute-rich homogeneous point cloud.

Dean Yang, General Manager at Linkfast Technology Limited, summed up, “Many 3D scanner manufacturers around the world have developed many types of products, but RIEGL always insists on high accuracy, speed, and long distance, and is the world leader in waveform processing capability. Customers participating in the product presentation are very much looking forward to the individual demonstrations arranged by Linkfast and RIEGL.”

Later in the week, both Thomas and Marcos traveled to Hong Kong, headquarters of the RIEGL Asia Pacific branch, where further demonstrations were taking place.

An event gathering a significant number of surveying companies, government institutions and academia was organized in collaboration with the Commercial Section of the Austrian Embassy and the prestigious Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics Department of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

During the event, the participants were demonstrated how the acquisition of scan and image data of large and complex projects can now be executed in a fraction of the time and with very little user interaction. Over 110 scans positions were acquired in little more than 2 hours. The setting was really complex: outdoor and indoor measurements, capturing of architecture, industrial environment, and vegetation. Everything automatically registered while the data was acquired. In fact, the scanning was so fast that there was no need to make use of the hot swap battery capabilities of the scanner!

In the afternoon, RIEGL visited an important government department where the interested audience was shown the flexibility of the scanner, which works in both short and long range, while being lightweight and easy to handle.

Post demonstrations, there were a number of positive comments: “RIEGL is one of Austria’s hidden champions. We are proud to support their efforts in the Asia Pacific region and this incredible event, where the high level of their latest technology in terrestrial laser scanning was practically demonstrated in various applications.”, emphasized Franz Roessler, Austrian Trade Commissioner for Hong Kong and Macao, Advantage Austria.
