Editor’s Note: GIS Resources Magazine released an article on “RIEGL LiDAR – Supporting Public Safety and Forensic Investigations for over 15 years” authored by RIEGL International Dave Foster, Public Safety and Forensic Technical Lead.
RIEGL’s terrestrial laser scanners and forensic software offer many benefits to the forensic world including more complete, objective evidence gathering, reduced time surveying the scene, significant road-closure time reductions, and new and innovative ways to present evidence.
After serious road traffic collisions, it is standard practice to accurately document forensic evidence in an objective and timely manner. This evidence recovery process can be stressful and time-consuming, especially in conditions where hundreds or thousands of vehicles are lined up and waiting.
Traditionally, the documentation of crime and crash scenes over the years has been done with photography and sketches. However, measurements with tape and sketches are extremely time consuming and require a large amount of time and money that could be better used in other areas of the forensic department.
Crash scene investigators also need to be able to recreate the scene with the knowledge and tools at their disposable. That’s where LiDAR comes into the picture. It is becoming more common for LiDAR to be used for forensic, police and crash scene investigations.
By utilizing technological know-how and real-world feedback from the RIEGL VZ series, the crime scene team can get results back at a fraction of the amount of time they would have spent onsite, and the information collected is more reliable and accessible.
“The test provided for here mirrored, as far as is possible, real world environments to examine the capabilities of the RIEGL VZ-400i. The series of tests throughout are repeatable. RIEGL is very pleased with the performance of the VZ-400i and RiSOLVE software in meeting and indeed exceeding the requirements set by the SpecCap testing team to determine the “fit for purpose” nature of the scanner and methodology when being deployed.”
