The Metaverse and Beyond

RIEGL at Reality Capture Network and Metacenter Global Week!

It’s a busy week for RIEGL USA as the teams exhibit and present at both Reality Capture Network (RCN) 2023 at Boise State University and Metacenter Global Week in Orlando, FL. The main focus on the horizon is the Metaverse, Digital Twins, and overall, how LiDAR impacts and benefits the many segments that this industry touches. As the industry evolves, RIEGL is even more inspired to continue innovating in 3D to the Metaverse and beyond!

The team arrived at RCN 2023 and prepared for a jam-packed week as both an exhibitor and presenter.

RCN 2023 brought together leaders from around the world in construction, engineering, architecture, surveying and mapping to discuss topics surrounding industry technology, reality capture hardware and software, project workflows, case studies, best practices, the future of Digital Twins, and the Metaverse.

At the RIEGL booth, there were impressive data sets being showcased in Unreal Engine (a 3D computer visualization software) that created a more immersive experience when viewing. There was also a RIEGL VZ-600i Terrestrial Laser Scanner on display and available for live demos. This scanner has really changed the way the industry thinks of terrestrial data with its incredible precision, lightweight nature, and ground-breaking speed.

Tan Nguyen, Division Manager of Terrestrial Laser Scanning for RIEGL USA performed a full scan of Morrison Center at Boise State University before the conference began and was able to highlight the data in a very well received live demonstration on the main stage. Attendees not only got to see this scanner in action but got a true overview of this technology and how it is setting the standard within the industry.

RIEGL exhibited and presented at Metacenter Global Week 2023 at the Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center in Orlando, FL! This conference brought together local Central Florida innovators and global industry names in XR/AR/VR, AI, Gaming, Fintech, Space, Simulation, Metaverse & Blockchain, DefenseTech, HealthTech, Sustainability, Sports & Entertainment, Smart Cities, etc.

Front and center at the entryway of the venue, RIEGL had a prime spot to meet and discuss the many applications and solutions that LiDAR can offer. With a variety of scanners and sensors on site and an impressive display of data fly throughs on the LED screen, many interested parties were thrilled to learn how this applies to their industries and wanted to take a deeper dive into the benefits it could offer their businesses.

On the RIEGL vehicle pictured above, we had the RIEGL VMY-1 Mobile Laser Scanner. This high accuracy survey-grade mobile mapping system provides users unrivaled imagery quality to be collected for many applications at once or per mission requirement with a smooth workflow and high-quality. On the tripod we had the RIEGL VZ-600i, setting the standard as a new era of professional terrestrial laser scanners with extreme versatility, high productivity, lightweight mobility, and ultimate performance. Highlighted on one of our UAV Affiliate Platforms, was the RIEGL miniVUX-3UAV, integrated onto a Watts Innovations Prism Sky. This sensor is a mini and mighty lightweight UAV LiDAR with up to 5 returns per max. 300,000 meas./sec. and 360° FOV.

In addition to exhibiting, RIEGL took to the stage to present in the panel “Digital Twins: Status Update, Opportunities, and Challenges Towards a Productive Metaverse”. RIEGL USA Senior Vice President, James Van Rens, contributed his wealth of knowledge around Digital Twins, LiDAR, and real-world applications and projects that he has been on the forefront of. This panel brought together a group of experts leading the development of Digital Twins in a broad range of markets and R&D environments and they shared their “from-the-trenches” experiences about developing Digital Twin infrastructure, technologies, and innovation pipelines to support effective deployment across many disciplines.

James Van Rens engaged in a dialogue with fellow panel participants during Metacenter Global Week.
