Utility Magazine recently published an article featuring the use of RIEGL LiDAR by Altavec, a RIEGL Australia customer, and how they are creating a 3D model of the entire AusNet energy & powerline network to help identify vegetation growth for maintenance to prevent bushfires. These fires can be caused if there is an accident or when trees and vegetation grow too close to the powerlines. Depending on where a bushfire takes place, it can cause catastrophic damage to wildlife and communities.
With the use of a RIEGL VUX-1LR Airborne Laser Scanner and a RIEGL VUX-1HA Mobile Scanning System, areas around powerlines and vegetation which is growing out of hand can be accurately surveyed, allowing for implementation of a safety and maintenance plan, and tracking of when intervention needs to be taken. Altavec welcomed the invitation to present these findings earlier this year at Amazon Web Services’ AWS Summit Online ANZ event in May.
The VUX-1LR Long Range is a very lightweight, compact and rugged laser scanner that was especially designed for airborne surveying missions from helicopter, gyrocopter, and other small aircraft. The sensor provides a maximum measurement range of 1,350 m, an effective measurement rate of up to 750,000 measurements/sec., and an operating flight altitude of up to 1,740 ft AGL.
The VUX-1HA high accuracy mobile scanning system is a very lightweight, compact and rugged laser scanner, that is easily mountable to whatsoever type of moving platform. The sensor meets the challenges of terrestrial mobile data acquisition in both measurement performance and in system integration. It is designed to be mounted in any orientation and even under limited space conditions and is perfectly suited for challenging survey missions based on cars, trains, robots, etc.
