Editor’s Note: We would like to highlight one of the presentations that was given at INTERGEO Digital 2020 last week by one of RIEGL USA’s long term customers, Quantum Spatial. Please read below to learn more information on their project with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation regarding their accuracy with LiDAR technology in the transportation industry.

Mark Meade, Senior Vice President with Quantum Spatial, led a presentation at INTERGEO Digital 2020, alongside Kyle King, Chief of Surveys with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation. Mark discussed how he and his team incorporated RIEGL airborne and unmanned LiDAR solutions while scanning a two-mile transportation mapping project for the Oklahoma Department of Transportation. This provided the perfect opportunity to perform extensive quantitative and qualitative testing of LiDAR point-clouds captured from three independent aerial and unmanned platforms.

The scan data was captured from a RIEGL VUX-1LR unmanned sensor on a UAV flown 250 feet up, from a rotary platform with dual RIEGL VUX-1LR unmanned sensors (Quantum Spatial’s CLASS LIDAR system) at 500 feet up, and with a RIEGL VQ-480i airborne laser scanning system from a rotary platform flown 600 feet upwards.

All surfaces were compared against precision control provided by Oklahoma DOT, and further compared against the other datasets. The testing provided considerable information about the performance of all three datasets, and for the applicability of these data for low-altitude corridor applications. The data was also useful for comparison of LiDAR performance on hard surfaces (pavement), in areas of dense vegetation; and on open, bare earth surfaces.
