R.E.Y. Engineers, Inc. has expanded its mobile mapping capabilities with the acquisition of the RIEGL VMY-2 Mobile Mapping System, marking 15 years of innovation and partnership with RIEGL. This milestone reflects R.E.Y.’s continued leadership in geospatial technology and its commitment to delivering high-precision solutions to clients across California and beyond.
In 2010, R.E.Y. made a bold move as a small business by investing in the RIEGL VMX system, becoming an early adopter of mobile laser scanning. That decision laid the foundation for a decade and a half of growth, precision, and client success.
“Since stepping into the mobile laser scanning market 15 years ago,” said Joe Feyder, PLS, Principal Manager, Remote Sensing Division at R.E.Y. “Our original RIEGL VMX system has performed beautifully. With the purchase of the new VMY scanner, we hope to continue to be at the forefront of technology and continue to provide the highest of quality and accuracy products for our clients.”
The RIEGL VMY-2 is not a replacement but a strategic enhancement. Its compact, lightweight design allows for faster deployment and greater flexibility, making it the perfect complement to R.E.Y.’s trusted VMX system. Additionally, R.E.Y. has added two 12-megapixel panoramic cameras and a Ladybug6 72-megapixel spherical camera to the system.
“I have been with R.E.Y. for 10 years,” said Daniel Clark, Senior LiDAR Technician at R.E.Y. “Over that time, I’ve seen the amazing data the VMX system provides. Now, with the VMY and its enhanced imagery capabilities, we’ll be able to collect more data, faster, and deliver even greater value to our clients. Pairing the VMY-2 with the Ladybug6 camera system and rear pavement cameras will allow us to provide the most accurate data possible.”
The RIEGL VMY-2’s versatility, ideal for asset inventory and lower-speed surveys, enhances R.E.Y.’s ability to deliver high-quality data-rich solutions.

“Working with the RIEGL VMX scanner and LiDAR data has truly been a game changer for our projects,” added Garrett McLaughlin, PE, PLS, Principal Manager at R.E.Y. “The level of detail and accuracy we’re able to capture has significantly enhanced our workflows. Adding the VMY system will take this even further—offering new tools that will elevate our design process and drive exceptional project outcomes.”
“Our original RIEGL VMX system has far exceeded our expectations and become the face of R.E.Y. Engineers,” said Caryle Buchholz, PE, PLS, Associate Vice President at R.E.Y. “We’re excited to add the VMY system to our toolkit and continue providing highly accurate deliverables and outstanding service to our clients. Cheers to many more years in partnership with RIEGL technologies.”
This latest investment not only expands R.E.Y. Engineers’ technical capabilities, but it also reaffirms their position at the forefront of mobile mapping innovation. With the RIEGL VMY-2, R.E.Y. is equipped to meet the evolving demands of infrastructure, transportation, and asset management projects with unmatched speed, precision, and flexibility.

“We are thrilled to continue supporting R.E.Y. Engineers as they expand their mobile mapping capabilities,” said Joshua France, Division Manager of MLS & TLS at RIEGL USA. “Their long-term commitment to RIEGL technology is a testament to the performance and reliability of our systems. The VMY will empower them to push boundaries even further.”
As the geospatial industry continues to evolve, the enduring partnership between RIEGL and R.E.Y. Engineers stands as a model of how long-term collaboration, trust in technology, and a shared vision for excellence can drive transformative results.
About the RIEGL VMY-2

With its smaller form factor compared to other MLS systems, the VMY-2 can be easily operated and mounted on a variety of platforms and can be integrated with other camera solutions such as a Ladybug6. It is a great system for asset inventory collection as well as lower speed survey projects.
