“LiDAR technology continues its emergence as an important tool for increased surveying and mapping accuracy and efficiency—even as providers await regulatory relief to allow them to fly beyond visual line of sight.”
RIEGL recently had the opportunity to be involved in a LiDAR and BVLOS UAVS webinar, hosted by Inside Unmanned Systems, and be apart of the panelists that discussed the benefits of LiDAR. Webinar moderator Major General James Poss (Ret.) was impressed by the important role UAS is playing in search and rescue efforts, surveying and mapping, and inspections of pipelines, bridges and mines. “We’re talking about a few centimeters here [of accuracy] and it’s actually going to be fantastic to see what that navigation enables with modern LiDAR’s. I’m excited about this,” Poss commented.
My-Linh Truong, RIEGL USA’s ULS / UAS segment manager, led the discussion on RIEGL’s high-end product line, explained the benefits of RIEGL’s unmanned LiDAR solutions, and offer best-for-the-job analysis of platforms, scanners and cameras. Webinar attendees were able to have an insight into rich data capture and reference databases for base maps through the discussion from the other panelists, as well.
Truong discussed a variety of RIEGL UAS LiDAR payloads including the VUX-SYS (VUX-1UAV/VUX-1LR), the miniVUX-1UAV and the miniVUX-1DL.
“What you’re looking for is something that provides high data acquisition rates and you’re looking for a one-and-done mindset,” she said. “You want to make sure that in your lengthy flight time you have the data storage capacity. You don’t want to have a lot of user interaction where you might accidentally not record your data. So with the RIEGL system, it’s our acquisition software running onboard the sensor. It records the full data stream stored on board the SSD storage on the sensor until you land.” said My-Linh Truong, UAS segment manager.
